The trucking industry added 700 jobs and unemployment fell to 5.1 percent in August, reports Transports Topics based on data from the U.S. Department of Labor. The trucking industry ended August at a seasonally adjusted 1,458,800 jobs, an increase of 39,300 jobs over August 2014.

The trucking industry added 700 jobs in August as the unemployment rate declined to 5.1%, a level that is considered full employment, the Labor Department reported Sept. 4. The 173,000 overall increase in employment followed a 215,000 rise the prior month.

Tamara Miller to leave Trucking HR Canada

Trucking HR Canada's Tamara Miller is leaving her position, to pursue an opportunity with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. Kim MacLaren, who played a lead role in developing National Occupational Standards for the trucking industry's non-driving occupations, will assume her duties on an interim basis, the organization announced. "Trucking HR Canada is a stronger organization thanks to Tamara's many contributions," said Trucking HR Canada CEO Angela Splinter.

Arkansas Gives $3 Million to University for Trucking Studies

Tom Courtway, president of the University of Central Arkansas, Scott Bennett, AHTD director and Steve Williams, chairman and CEO of Maverick USA Inc. The University of Central Arkansas received a $3 million award to create an endowed faculty position that will focus on the trucking industry, the Associated Press reported. The university says the new major will train students in motor carrier operations, regulation, safety, risk management, transportation policy and labor relations, AP reported.
