Ashtead took a hit on Wednesday after a double downgrade by Bank of America Merrill Lynch, which cut the stock to 'underperform' from 'buy' and slashed its price target to 1,000p from 1,300p, pointing to a "triple whammy" of worrying trends. "We have become increasingly concerned that the rental rate environment has weakened in recent months and the outlook for further rate growth from the current cyclical peak looks increasing unlikely," the bank said.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries shares slumped 16% on Tuesday, heading towards their biggest ever fall in a day, after the drugmaker's warning that 2016 sales would be flat at best due to costs related to remediation work at its plants. Analysts estimate a roughly 8-10% hit to profit for the year as Sun Pharma struggles to fix manufacturing problems at one of its own key plants and those of Ranbaxy Laboratories, the troubled rival it bought last year.

At last check, WTI crude for August delivery was trading down 7.71% to $52.54 as of 2:51 p.m. ET today, while Brent crude is also down 6.28% to $56.53 a barrel. Shares of Keurig Green Mountain fell in extended trading Wednesday after the maker of single-serve coffee brewing systems reported disappointing fiscal second-quarter results and cut its estimates for the year. Keurig said sales of its newer Keurig 2.0 system were slower than it expected and said it is working to solve the problem.
