USDA Says Meat Inspectors Might Be Furloughed
2013-02-16 19:49:00| Beef
Whether it turns out to be seriously considered or merely political grandstanding, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack helped add pressure to cattle markets last week when he suggested USDA may furlough federal meat inspectors for two weeks in order to meet the mandatory federal spending cuts (sequestration) that take place March 1 if lawmakers fail to agree to a spending package by then. This suggestion implies that meat inspectors would be regarded as “non-essential” federal employees. read more

USDA Reports Say Climate Change Will Affect Agriculture
2013-02-14 22:34:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Two USDA reports say U.S. agriculture and forest management will have to adapt to climate change and that some of those efforts are already underway. "Its well documented that the climate is changing, that we are seeing changes in temperature and in changes in precipitation patterns, and that those changes are having implications for forests and for agriculture," says William Hohenstein, director of climate change program, USDA. "What these reports actually look at in more detail are the changes that we expect in changes in terms of extreme events. Changes in the probability of droughts, and floods and how that also will have implications for our resources." LimelightPlayerUtil.initEmbed("limelight_player_866632"); read more
