Possible carcinogen found in common bread products sold in US

Although potassium bromate has been banned as a food additive by the European Union, U.K., Canada, and Brazil as a known carginogen, environmental research and advocacy organization Environmental Working Group has found that at least 86 baked goods and other products commonly sold in supermarkets throughout the US contain the compound. Potassium bromate is a by-product of ozone which is used as disinfectant in drinking water.

Whole Foods Market will debut a new sourdough bread Wednesday, Oct. 21, made in partnership with South Florida's Funky Buddha Brewery. Spent grains, the leftover malt and other elements in the beer making process, are usually passed on to farmers for compost or feed.

"We are firmly committed to staying true to the recipes, baking process and other factors that have made Dave's Killer Bread the best-selling organic bread in the U.S.," said Allen L. Shiver, Flowers Foods' president and CEO.
