The nation's largest strike in recent memory is now underway as a union representing about 40,000 Verizon line workers was unable to reach an agreement with the broadband and telecommunications giant. About 1,500 unionized Verizon line workers, installers, customer service representatives and repairmen are affected in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties.

This is the largest strike in the United States since Verizon workers last walked off the job in 2011, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That strike involved 45,000 workers.

About 39,000 Verizon landline and cable workers on the East Coast are expected to walk off the job after they say there has been little progress in negotiations since their contract expired nearly eight months ago. The workers, members of two unions - the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - represent installers, customer service employees, repairmen and other service workers in Connecticut, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., for Verizon's wireline business, which provides fixed-line phone services and FiOS Internet service.

American Apparel lays off workers, mulls some outsourcing -LA Times

Teen apparel retailer American Apparel Llc is laying off hundreds of workers as it overhauls its production process, which could include outsourcing part of its production to another U.S. manufacturer, the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday. "If we do decide to produce some pieces out-of-house, they will still be American-made," Chief Executive Paula Schneider wrote in a letter obtained by the Times.
