(Telecompaper) Canada has completed its auction of frequencies in the 700 MHz band, awarding 97 licences to eight companies for a total CAD 5.27 billion. The government said the results of the 22-day auction mean there will be at least four operators able to offer services in every region. Operators will also be able to expand LTE services to rural areas. The big winners of the auction were the existing mobile operators. Bell acquired 31 licences for CAD 566 million total, Telus bought 30 licences for CAD 1.143 billion and Rogers Communications took 22 licences for CAD 3.292 billion. Videotron also acquired seven licences for CAD 233 million, MTS acquired one licence for CAD 9 million, and SaskTel bought one block for CAD 8 million, focusing on their home regions of respectively Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Newcomer Bragg took four lots of spectrum for CAD 20 million, and Feenix took one for CAD 0.3 million. Two participants, TBayTel and Novus, did not acquire any spectrum, and one licence went unsold. Bidders have until 05 March to pay 20 percent of the spectrum fees, with the remainder due by 02 April. The next major auction in Canada will be the 2,500 MHz band, scheduled to begin in April 2015.

Telecom wins fourth lot of 700 MHz spectrum

2014-01-22 09:00:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Telecom New Zealand has won the bid for the final 2x5 MHz lot of 700 MHz radio spectrum, the government announced. Telecom chief executive Simon Moutter said the fourth lot of spectrum will help improve the speed and capacity of Telecom's 4G mobile network, including in the less densely populated areas. Telecom bid NZD 83 million for the final lot, in addition to the total of NZD 66 million spent on the three lots in the initial auction round. The purchase of the fourth lot is conditional upon approval from the Commerce Commission. In the first round of the auction, Telecom and Vodafone New Zealand each successfully bid for 2x15 MHz (three lots), while 2Degrees successfully bid for 2x10 MHz (two lots) leaving a single 2x5 MHz lot unsold from the available nine lots. The auction for this lot has proceeded over recent weeks at NZD 1 million increments for each bidding interval, starting from the NZD 22 million reserve price. A final assignment process, during which each successful bidder will bid for a location within the spectrum band, is still to be held.

Wind withdraws from 700 MHz auction

2014-01-14 15:34:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Wind Mobile has withdrawn from Canada's auction of frequencies in the 700 MHz band, after the company's controlling shareholder Vimpelcom decided against funding a bid for spectrum, Wind CEO Anthony Lacavera told Bloomberg. The spectrum auction was designed to provide a boost to the country's smaller operators, who first won frequencies in the last major auction in 2008. The three largest players, Bell Canada, Telus and Rogers, are each limited to one block of airwaves each. With the departure of Wind, there is a risk there will be no bidders for the fourth block of frequencies in some regional markets. The auction started on 14 January.

T-Mobile buys 700 MHz spectrum from Verizon for USD 2.4 bln

2014-01-06 13:44:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) T-Mobile US has agreed to buy additional spectrum in the 700 MHz band from Verizon Wireless for USD 2.365 billion cash and a swap of other frequencies. Verizon will gain AWS and PCS spectrum worth around USD 950 million as part of the deal. T-Mobile already holds spectrum in the same 'A block' of the 700 MHz band in Boston and the deal with Verizon gives it the important low-band spectrum in nine of the top ten and 21 of the top 30 markets in the US. In total, T-Mobile will have low-band spectrum covering 158 million people, including New York, LA, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Washington DC and Detroit. The company aims to deploy the new spectrum as early as the fourth quarter of 2014. Also, as part of the transaction, the two companies will realign spectrum blocks in certain markets, primarily in northern California and the Atlanta area. The agreements are subject to approval by the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice and are expected to close in mid-2014.
