Politicians Are No Scientists On Climate Change, Happy Give Medical Opinions On Ebola
2014-10-21 21:32:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Huffington Post: "I'm not a scientist, but " has become something of a cliché among politicians who want to weigh in on climate science without actually having to say whether they believe it. But when it comes to Ebola, a number of the same not-a-scientist politicians have been more than happy to provide their medical opinions, as Think Progress documented Monday. Many of these politicians have made false statements about Ebola, from claiming one could catch it at a cocktail party, to arguing that it can be transmitted...

Fracking boom will increase global carbon emissions, scientists warn
2014-10-16 12:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Blue and Green: A global fracking boom will not help prevent climate change, as cheap shale gas would displace cleaner renewable energy and actually increase carbon emissions, according to a new study. Because the burning of shale gas, extracted through the controversial process of fracking, releases around 50% less carbon than conventional fossil fuels such as coal, proponents have suggested it could act as a bridge fuel. While investment in renewables is scaled up to meet demand, shale gas could fill in...

Scientists: EPA Underestimating Renewables Potential
2014-10-14 20:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Climate Central: Generating electricity in the U.S. can be a lot greener and more climate-friendly than the Obama administration expects it to be through 2030, researchers at the Union of Concerned Scientists said in an analysis released Tuesday. The report says the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency set each state's renewable energy production targets far too low in the proposed Clean Power Plan, the Obama Administration's effort to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from existing coal-fired power plants. The...

Scientists identify potential cause for 40 per cent of pre-term births
2014-10-14 08:58:43| Biotech - Topix.net
Scientists from Queen Mary University of London and UCL have identified what they believe could be a cause of pre-term premature rupture of the fetal membrane , which accounts for 40 per cent of pre-term births, and is the main reason for infant death world-wide. The researchers, whose work was funded by the charity Wellbeing of Women, used bioengineering techniques to test the effect of repetitive stretch on tissues of the amniotic membrane which surrounds and protects the baby prior to birth.
