Scientists find surprising biodiversity between forests
2014-05-20 22:45:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Mongabay: The Theory of Island Biogeography, coined by Robert MacArthur and E.O. Wilson, helps describe why species are distributed as they are. The larger and closer an island is to another (or to the mainland), the more biodiverse it should be. This can be used to describe actual islands in the ocean, like the Galapagos, or even mountaintops, like the Madrean Sky Islands in southern Arizona and New Mexico. In human-dominated countryside areas, forests are often fragmented and scattered among a matrix...

Scientists work out how create matter from light, to finally prove Einsteins E=mc2
2014-05-20 19:38:25| Extremetech
Physicists in England claim they have discovered how to create matter from light, by smashing together individual massless protons -- a feat that was first theorized back in 1934, and has been considered practically impossible until now. If this new discovery pans out, the final piece of the physics jigsaw puzzle that describes how light and matter interact would be complete. No one's quite sure of the repercussions if matter can indeed be produced from photon-photon collision, but I'm sure something awesomely scientific will emerge before long.

Tea Party Less Likely to Trust Scientists on Environment
2014-05-20 09:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Portsmouth Patch: The Carsey Institute at UNH released the findings from a policy brief, "Do You Trust Scientists About the Environment?" The report found New Hampshire Public Radio listeners much more likely to trust scientists. Other research points: Almost two-thirds of New Hampshire residents surveyed in January-early February 2014 say that they trust scientists to provide accurate information about environmental issues. Only 12 percent do not trust scientists to provide this information. Large majorities...

Poll: Tea Party Members Really, Really Don't Trust Scientists
2014-05-20 09:51:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Mother Jones: It's one of the biggest trends in US politics over the last decade: A growing left-right split over the validity of scientific information. This "science gap" is apparent most of all on the issue of climate change, but the problem is much broader, encompassing topics ranging from evolution to the safety and effectiveness of condoms in preventing sexually transmitted diseases. Yet even those of us who know how politicized science has become may be surprised by some new polling data out of the Carsey...
