A Quebec judge has approved the new terms of a $450-million settlement fund for victims and creditors of the Lac-Megantic train disaster, prompting a lawyer in the case to say cheques should begin arriving in the mail by Christmas. Patrice Benoit, lawyer for Montreal Maine and Atlantic Railroad , the now-defunct railway company at the centre of the 2013 disaster, said a few administrative issues remain but that "everything is settled."

Reuters: A New Jersey judge on Friday rejected the latest attempt by environmentalists to block a $225 million settlement between Exxon Mobil Corp. and Governor Chris Christie's administration over pollution clean-up costs. The case is controversial because the settlement accounts for less than 3 percent of the $8.9 billion in damages that the state previously said it would seek. Judge denies environmentalists' intervention in Exxon case

A Democratic state senator and environmental groups cannot intervene in the state's $225 million settlement with Exxon Mobil over contaminated gas stations and other sites, a New Jersey judge ruled Friday. Superior Court Judge Michael Hogan said Friday he denied the request from state Sen. Raymond Lesniak and the four groups because they did not have standing to bring the lawsuit in the first place.
