Samsung sells non-core assets, buys back shares

(Telecompaper) Samsung Group has agreed to sell stakes in its units Samsung Techwin and Samsung General Chemicals to Hanwha Group for KRW 1.9 trillion. The proceeds will be reinvested in its core activities. Techwin and General Chemicals are owned by six subsidiaries of Samsung, including Samsung Electronics. Samsung Electronics said its stakes in the Techwin and Chemicals companies are worth KRW 100 billion and KRW 661 billion. Samsung Electronics also announced it will buy back shares valued at KRW 2.19 trillion (USD 2 billion). According to a regulatory filing, Samsung Electronics will buy back 1.65 million common shares and 250,000 preferred shares on the open market by the end of February.

Samsung sells 800,000 Galaxy Gear smartwatches in 2 months

(Telecompaper) Samsung Electronics has announced sales of over 800,000 of its Galaxy Gear smartwatches since the new device launched two months ago. The company said Gear sales have been better than its own expectations and it would expand sales promotions for the wearable device for the year-end holiday sales, Reuters reports. Priced at around USD 300, the Gear works as an accessory to a Galaxy smartphone, with a small OLED screen offering basic functions like message and call notifications. The device has been offered free or at discounted prices in several countries to customers buying the Galaxy Note 3 from Samsung. The Gear worked initially only with the Note 3 and Samsung has been gradually expanding compatibility with other devices in the Galaxy range.
