These 15 animal species have the lowest chance for survival: Researchers urge to act
2015-03-16 11:00:00| LifeSciencesWorld
[NEWS] Climbing rats, seabirds and tropical gophers are among the 15 animal species that are at the absolute greatest risk of becoming extinct very soon. Expertise and money is needed to save them and other highly threatened species. A new study shows that a subset of highly threatened species - in this case 841 - can be saved from extinction for about $1.3 billion a year. However, for 15 of them the chances of conservation success are really low. The study publi…

Earth Times: ENSO, otherwise known as the El Nio Southern Oscillation, is one of the most startling examples of climate change. As we have to adjust everywhere to such changes in our everyday concerns, it is useful that research has discovered connections between an animal?s habitat and climate change. Jared D. Wolfe, C. John Ralph of the Klamath Bird Observatory and the US Forest Service, with Pablo Elizondo of the Costa Rican Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad (INBio) studied the "Changes in the apparent...

New Algae Species Helps Coral Stand the Heat
2015-03-01 10:03:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Nature World: It's no secret that the world's coral reefs are rapidly declining, taking the one-two punch that is warming temperatures and mounting ocean acidification. However, there is hope, and it's coming straight from an unknown member of the natural world. Researchers have just discovered a new species of algae, and it's one that seems to be able to help corals survive otherwise deadly temperatures. That's at least according to a study recently published in the journal Scientific Reports, which details...

Working alone or in combination with hyperspectral or multi-spectral imaging from satellite or airborne sources, PSR+ 3500 provides non-destructive species identification in situ. Portable 350–2,500 nm unit offers auto-shutter, auto-exposure, and auto-dark exposure. Using reflectance measurements, researchers can discriminate between species by examining distinctive absorption features in full spectrum such as moisture content, color variation, and lignin/cellulose values.
