France wins European Court decision on telecom tax

2013-06-28 08:08:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) The French government has welcomed the European Court of Justice's ruling in support of its tax on electronic communication operators to help finance public TV. The case was brought by the European Commission, which thought the tax contrary to EU law. The court rejected the case and ordered the EC to pay legal costs. The French tax provides for telecom operators to contribute up to 0.9 percent of their revenue as a public TV tax. The measure was introduced in order to offset the loss of revenue for public broadcaster France Televisions when its channels stopped airing ads after 20:00 hrs.
