Bethany, a suburb of Portland about nine miles west of the city, has been a community in transition since its earliest day. Forests were removed to allow farming. Dirt roads gave way to ones of gravel and pavement. Farms eventually gave way to housing and, with the expansion of the urban growth boundary in the 1980s, additional farms were subdivided. Don Nelson's Bethany: A Community in Transition serves as a reminder of an earlier day and the changing community through the decades.
