AT&T completes acquisition of Cricket

2014-03-14 08:46:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) AT&T has completed its acquisition of prepaid mobile operator Leap Wireless, following approval from the FCC. AT&T announced in July 2013 that it would acquire Leap for USD 15 per share cash. Leap shareholders will also receive a contingent right entitling them to the net proceeds received on the sale of Leap's 700 MHz A Block spectrum. In the coming weeks, Leap, which operates under the Cricket brand, will be integrated with AT&T's existing operations to create the "new Cricket". The provider will continue to offer no-contract services with a range of simple, low-cost plans as well as smartphones. Customers will have access to AT&T's LTE network covering nearly 280 million people, and the Cricket brand will be rolled out to new markets. AT&T plans to drop the Aio Wireless brand it launched last year and move these customers to Cricket. Customer migrations are expected to take around 18 months. In addition, AT&T said it will immediately begin to put Leap's spectrum to use to support its LTE services. Leap's network covers around 97 million people in 35 US states, and Cricket had 4.57 million customers as of 28 February.
