Belgian copyright group Sabam sues ISPs

2013-04-30 16:05:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Belgian copyright group Sabam has launched a lawsuit against the country's main ISPs in an attempt to collect copyright fees for internet content accessed by their customers. Sabam said in a statement that it attempted to negotiate a fee with Belgacom, Telenet and Voo, but was unable to reach an agreement. As a result a court case was filed at the Brussels court of first instance in April. Sabam, which has been active in the past pursuing illegal file-sharing sites, said EU jurisprudence is moving towards an inclusion of a larger number of actors in the process of delivering public communication. Internet access providers should be considered part of this process and as such liable for copyright fees, the group said. Consultations with Belgian and foreign lawyers and experts supported its argument, it said. A decision in the case is expected in 2014.
