Brazil passes 100 million broadband users in May

(Telecompaper) Brazil surpassed 100 million broadband connections in early May, said the president of the Brazilian Association of Telecommunications, Antonio Carlos Valente, during the opening of the 57th Telebrasil Panel, held in Brasilia. According to the industry group, growth in the number of broadband lines in the past 12 months was 37 percent, with 27 million new connections activated in the period. Of the total 100 million accesses, 78.7 million were via mobile networks and 21.3 million over fixed infrastructure. Mobile broadband access grew 45 percent compared to May 2012. In the mobile internet segment, 64.1 million are 3G connections, including smartphones, and 14.6 million are data terminals, including modems and M2M chips. The new 4G mobile broadband technology already has about 50,000 users.
