Canonical falls short in fundraising drive for Ubuntu phone

2013-08-22 10:33:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Canonical has fallen short in its target to raise USD 32 million through crowdsourcing to produce the Ubuntu Edge smartphone. The group launched in July a 30-day fundraising drive on the site Indiegogo, but at the end of the campaign only raised USD 12.8 million. The donations from almost 20,000 people and businesses, including USD 80,000 from Bloomberg LP, will be refunded. While production of the Ubuntu Edge will not go ahead, Canonical said it was still in talks with major manufacturers on developing the Ubuntu mobile operating OS, and it expects devices running the software to reach the market in 2014. In June it also formed a Carrier Advisory Group to seek input from operators on developing the platform.
