General Mills, which produces the popular breakfast cereal in Minneapolis, had to look across the ocean for its supply of oats rather than its traditional source -- the Canadian Prairies -- where most of the global supply originates. Chris Ferris, the senior Canadian grains analyst with Informa Economics, can't necessarily vouch for that story, but it's one he heard among many other tales of woe from last winter.
