Classic locomotive to grace Virginia rails once more
2015-05-30 07:45:44| Railroads - Topix.net
The red carpet will be rolled out today in downtown Roanoke to celebrate the return of a venerable old friend - the J Class 611 steam locomotive. Built in 1950 in Roanoke by Norfolk & Western Railway - a predecessor of Norfolk Southern Railway - the 611 has spent the past year undergoing restoration work at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, N.C. The sole survivor of 14 Class J locomotives built at Norfolk & Western's East End Shops between 1941 and 1950, the locomotive has spent most of its time since retiring in 1959 at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke.
