Consumer Groups Push for Salmonella to Be Declared an Adulterant

Scott Shearer, Bockorny Group, Washington, DC In a letter to USDA, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and several leaders of Congress, the Safe Food Coalition, urged that the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) immediately declare antibiotic-resistant strains of Salmonella to be adulterants. The letter also makes several additional recommendations about Salmonella control including requesting that FSIS require poultry plants to reassess their HACCP plans for Salmonella, enhance FSIS policy to assure that product linked to outbreaks is considered adulterated and seek authority from Congress for enforceable performance standards, mandatory recall authority and financial penalties. read more
