Silicon Photovoltaic Wafer Screening System, developed by NREL scientists, puts pressure on silicon wafers destined to become PV cells in order to find which ones are too fragile to make it through manufacturing process. Able to be retrofitted into assembly line, this instrument rejects weak wafers before they go through enhancement process, conserving time and investment. Cube-shaped furnace exposes a silicon wafer to thermal stress in form of carefully calibrated, elevated temperatures.
