U.S. EPA finalized standards to protect fish and other aquatic life drawn into cooling water systems at power plants and factories. Components of final regulation include reduction of fish impingement for facilities that meet specific withdraw requirements, conducting studies to help permitting authority determine site-specific entrainment mortality controls, and mandate that intake flow of new units at existing facility be reduced to levels similar to closed cycle, recirculation systems.
