(Telecompaper) FCC chairman Tom Wheeler said he expects the next major auction of spectrum for mobile services to take place in mid-2015. The exact timeline of the proposed incentive auctions, which will allow broadcasters who surrender frequencies to share in some of the auction proceeds, will be discussed at the FCC meeting in January, Wheeler announced in a blog posting. The commission would decide on the rules of the proposal in the spring and then consult on the procedure for the auction in the second half of 2014. Wheeler said the auction has taken up the largest share of his time since starting at the FCC a month ago, and the commission plans to put particular emphasis on ensuring the software for the auction performs correctly.
