Farmers call on government to keep grain hauling rules in place

2014-11-21 04:11:56| Railroads - Topix.net

Alberta farm groups are calling on the federal government to extend the minimum grain hauling requirements for Canada's railways, even though this year's harvest was significantly smaller than the bumper crop of 2013. The mandated volume minimums - which require Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway to move one million tonnes of grain per week or face financial penalties - are set to expire Nov. 29. They were put in place by government order last March following complaints that rail companies were providing poor service to western grain farmers.
