Guardian: What is the carbon price? Carbon pricing started on 1 July 2012 as a result of the federal government's post-election deal with the Greens and key independents Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor. The aim is to reduce Australia's greenhouse gases to meet a bipartisan target of a minimum 5%, and up to 25%, reduction in emissions by 2020.
