Del Smith, founder of Evergreen Aviation, wanted so badly to fly he made it half way through U.S. Air Force flight training in the 1950s before he was disqualified for being color blind, according to his lifelong friend and military roommate, former U.S. Sen. Slade Gorton, R.-Washington. Del Smith so badly wanted to fly airplanes he managed to keep his color blindness a secret from U.S. Air Force officials.
