Germany's Merck cautious after deal spree

Germany's Merck KGaA forecasts little or no improvement in earnings this year after a slight drop in fourth-quarter net profit, with stiff competition for its blockbuster multiple-sclerosis treatment and higher research spending likely to offset the impact of recent acquisitions. Multiple-sclerosis drug Rebif faces strong competition in North America and Europe while Merck continues to spend on developing new cancer treatments.
