Google, Rockstar end Nortel patent litigation

2014-11-21 09:31:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Google and patent consortium Rockstar have agreed to settle their patent litigation, according to a Texas court filing. The specific terms of the deal were not disclosed in the filing, which did reveal that the agreement was struck on 12 November and that all matters of dispute between the parties have been settled. The Rockstar consortium is a joint venture owned by Apple, Microsoft, BlackBerry, Ericsson and Sony. In 2011 the consortium paid USD 4.5 billion for thousands of Nortel Network patents, including intellectual property relating to mobile phones and Wi-Fi networking. In October 2013 Rockstar filed complaints against Google as well as HTC, Samsung and other smartphone makers that use Google's Android OS on grounds of infringement of seven Nortel patents related to search engine technology. Although the court filing states that Google and Rockstar have settled "all matters in controversy between the parties", it doesn't specify whether Rockstar has also settled with the other handset makers.
