Google acquires Nest for $3.2 billion: Is it finally time for smart homes to become a reality?

Google has acquired Nest Labs, maker of the Nest thermostat and Protect smoke detector, for the princely sum of $3.2 billion in cash. Putting aside the utterly absurd price -- it's twice what Google paid for YouTube, and 64 times what it paid for Android -- the main takeaway here is that Google, after a false start with Android@Home, is getting back into the home automation/smart home/internet of things game. The big picture, ladies and gentlemen, is that your dream of a smart, internet-connected home, with water, heating, light, security, and AC that you can control from anywhere, is very nearly here -- and it'll be powered by Google.
