Google launches Android 5.0 Lollipop OS
2014-10-16 11:00:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Google has announced the launch of version 5.0 of its Android operating system, dubbed Lollipop, which will be included on its new Nexus 6 smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet before being rolled out on Nexus 4, 5, 7, 10 and Google Play edition devices "in the coming weeks". The company described Android Lollipop, previously codenamed Android L, as its "largest, most ambitious release on Android", with over 5,000 new APIs for developers. Its revamped design aesthetic, which Google calls 'Material Design', aims to create a unified design across all devices. In addition, the company claims that content now responds to touch and voice in more intuitive ways, and transitions between tasks have been made more fluid. Notifications adopt a card-like appearance on the lock screen, and the design is also used to deliver Google Search results and to switch from one app to another when multitasking. The new OS also introduces a feature called "Smart Lock", enabling users to set a trusted location or device as a trigger to disable the need to type in a password. Other additions include a new battery saver feature that Google says extends the life of an Android-powered device by up to 90 minutes.
