2013-11-01 08:31:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Google has unveiled the Nexus 5, its latest smartphone developed with LG and the first to run Android KitKat. The new 5-inch smartphone is available in black or white unlocked on Google Play in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan and Korea (and soon India) from USD 349. It will be available with other retailers in the US Europe, Central/South Americas, Asia, CIS and the Middle East from mid-November. Android 4.4 (KitKat) will be available on the Nexus 4, 7 and 10, and the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play edition devices in the coming weeks. The Nexus 5 comes with a full HD IPS display with new in-cell touch technology for faster recognition and better outdoor visibility and offers a choice of 16GB or 32GB memory. It features an 8MP camera, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, LTE and 2GB RAM. To support smartphones with less memory, Google said it has reduced the memory footprint of the latest version of Android. Unnecessary background services were removed and the memory consumption of features used often was reduced, allowing Android to run "comfortably" on a phone with 512MB of RAM, Google said. Other new features of the KitKat releases include a new Phone app with enhanced contacts search and Caller ID by Google to match incoming phone numbers to a business. The new Google Hangouts app with integrated SMS is also included, as well as increased integration of Google Now and voice commands.
