Harman Industries International is spending nearly $1 billion for two companies, adding systems that speed the development of an "Internet of things" in which people can control a wide range of devices as well as software to allow wireless updates. Stamford-based Harman is paying $780 million for Symphony Teleca, a Mountain View, Calif.-based company with 8,000 employees, and $170 million for Israel-based Red Bend Software.
