Homes near Messex evacuated after South Platte River levee breaches

An emergency evacuation order was sent to 15 homes near the small Eastern Plains town of Messex after a levee along the South Platte River breached Monday morning, the Washington County Office of Emergency Management said. The evacuation affects about 20 people after the breach was reported about 7 a.m. Monday by Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad officials who started infrastructure protection along the rail lines.
