Standing outside the Guiding Light Mission in Grand Rapids, Dave, 47, fell out of a middle-class life after he lost his job at office furniture maker Steelcase Inc. A high school dropout, he'd worked in an auto body shop and in production at the office furniture maker, Steelcase, Inc., making as much as $50,000 a year. But in 2003, after 13 years, he was caught in a wave of job cuts that swept through the furniture industry.
