Isle of Wight birdman contest in festival finale

THIS year's Festival of the Sea celebrations will close with a raft of seaside shenanigans - including a cardboard box boat race and an Isle of Wight take on the famous Birdman of Bognor contest. Billed as the festival finale, and a combination of the traditional and the ridiculous, the All at Sea events will be held at Small Hope Beach, Shanklin, on the weekend of July 4 and 5. Prizes will be awarded to the birdman, or birdwoman, who can leap the furthest from a scaffold and to the winners of the cardboard box boat race, courtesy of Specsavers.
