The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department's Canine Unit is among the largest explosive-detection units in the country, with an average of 50 dogs in service at any time. The unit is charged with patrolling the stations, tracks, yards, shops and trains of the Long Island, Metro-North and Staten Island railroads, a responsibility that is spread over 5,000 square miles in 14 counties in two states.
