Mexican Congress gives final approval of telecom reform

2013-05-01 15:27:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) The Mexican Senate on 30 April gave final approval to an expansive reform of the telecommunications sector, which aims to promote competition in the industry and restrict the powers of major players such as America Movil and Televisa. According to Reuters, the project encourages more foreign investment in the telecommunications industry and gives regulators the power to prevent companies controlling more than 50 percent of the market. The telecommunications law is part of the reform agenda of the president Enrique Pena Nieto presented in March. This is the second approval by the Senate, after it revised an earlier revision of the legislation; this was then passed by the lower house of parliament a week ago. The bill still must be passed by a majority of state legislatures and be signed by the President, a process that will likely be completed in June.
