Microsoft starts lay-offs with 2,100 employees

(Telecompaper) Microsoft said it was laying off 2,100 workers, as part of its previously announced plan to cut 18,000 jobs, streamline its workforce and integrate the acquisition of Nokia's handset unit, the Seattle Times reported. The job reductions will take place across the company in various divisions although most of the total cuts were set to take place among former Nokia positions. In the Puget Sound region, where Microsoft is based, 747 jobs are being eliminated. The separation date for those losing their jobs locally will begin on 17 Novermber, according to the state Employment Security Department. Microsoft will close its Silicon Valley research lab and break up its Trustworthy Computing group, which works on cybersecurity and privacy issues. The company is also cutting contractors.
