Morning Review: $1.5M Lake Macatawa home gets character from salvaged pickle vats

Longtime Holland residents may remember the large wooden vats that once held brined pickles on the grounds of the H.J. Heinz factory on the south shore of Lake Macatawa. The vats are mostly gone, but their big cypress and oak planks have new life across the lake in the beams, rafters and shelves of this 2015 Lakeshore Parade of Homes entry at 534 Howard Ave. The 4,000-square-foot home by Schippers Construction LLC is one of 31 homes featured in this year's parade, which began Wednesday, June 11, and runs through Saturday, June 20. This home is valued between $750,000 and $1 million, says project manager Kent Lee.
