N.J. makes case for pollution settlement with Exxon

In response to the thousands of comments opposing its $225 million settlement with Exxon Mobil, the Christie administration issued its formal response on Thursday, defending the deal even though previous administrations had sought almost $9 billion for environmental damages. The 87-page response, filed with a state judge who will decide whether to approve the settlement, reiterates many of the major arguments the administration has made since the controversial deal was first made public last winter: "The proposed settlement can hardly be viewed as a signal to polluters that they can pollute the state's land and water with impunity," the response states.
