In 2005, the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT) developed the Leader in the Light program to honor member companies which demonstrated excellence in energy efficiency. NAREIT expanded the scope of the program to a broader analysis of sustainability and formed a key strategic alliance with the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB), to ensure that sustainability best practices for REITs and real estate companies are both encouraged and recognized.
