On the morning of May 20, Betsy Oldstone opened her front door to the sight of a towering crane hoisting a 49-foot pole that was descending directly into her freshly planted garden. When Oldstone, a former teacher, noticed the workers were pulling up her new drought-tolerant South African ice plants in front of her home on Exchange Place in La Jolla, she went outside to investigate.
