Researchers from University of Hertfordshire in UK have developed and tested prototype of portable, real-time airborne asbestos detector as described in "Real-time detection of airborne asbestos by light scattering from magnetically re-aligned fibers" paper, which was published in Optics Express. If commercialized, this tool could help workers in commercial and residential buildings identify if they have inadvertently disturbed asbestos fibers into air.
