Petition to rename Justin Herman Plaza after Maya Angelou

Bayview residents Brett and Michelle Harris Anderson filed a petition with Change.org to rename San Francisco's Justin Herman Plaza after Maya Angelou, a famous poet and author with ties to the city. The parents were recently watching their four children run around the plaza's Vaillancourt Fountain, when their 8-year-old son said, "This place is cool!" and then asked, "Who is M. Justin Herman? Why was the space named after him?" The parents didn't know the answer and later researched the former city planner of San Francisco who was executive director of the SF Redevelopment Agency from 1959 to 1971.
