Qualcomm buys Wilocity, launches new tri-band platforms

2014-07-03 09:24:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm has acquired Wilocity, a specialist in 60 GHz wireless chipsets based on the IEEE 802.11ad standard, also known as WiGig technology. No financial details were disclosed. Qualcomm also launched a family of tri-band platforms that combine Qualcomm Atheros Wi-Fi and WiGig systems with the goal to meet future demand for data and wireless innovations. The initial tri-band platform is a reference design based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, a mobile platform designed to support WiGig and enable applications such as 4k video streaming, peer-to-peer content sharing, networking, wireless docking, and backing up entire media libraries in seconds. With the integration of WiGig into its mobile platforms, Qualcomm will enable mobile devices to provide near-instantaneous access to the cloud, allowing for greater cellular network offload. 802.11ad also extends the Qualcomm VIVE portfolio, and builds on the company's recent initiatives to develop Wi-Fi networks with11ac 2.0 systems with MU-MIMO.
