SITUATION:
While there were only three retail plug-in electric vehicles on the market in early 2011, that number will continue to grow. For the 2013 and 2014 model years, there are six new models rolling out that are good to notice.
These upcoming electric drive models are: the 2014 BMW i3, 2014 Cadillac ELR, 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV, 2013 Fiat 500e, 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid, and 2013 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive.
SIGNIFICANCE:
Some of these have been built on existing drivetrains, some of them are new electric vehicle designs, such as what BMW is rolling out in the next model year. The market is still waiting for these EVs to roll out, with the Smart ForTwo ED leading the way.
The questions for effectively marketing electric vehicles continue including whether theyll be widely distributed across US markets, the price buyers will see with available incentives, and the overall functionality and appeal of the car based on car shopper priorities.
