So long Atmel in Colorado Springs; hello Microchip

Atmel Corp., which has operated a semiconductor manufacturing plant in Colorado Springs since 1989, will pass into the history books Monday when it is acquired by Arizona-based Microchip Technology Inc. for $3.56 billion. Atmel shareholders on Friday overwhelmingly approved the transaction, which topped an earlier deal with London-based Dialog Semiconductor that the British company had declined to top.
