Sudan President Omer Al-Bashir expressed his keenness to see the ties between Khartoum and New Delhi develop further during a meeting with India's Foreign Minister, Salman Khurshid on a visit to Sudan this week. The President said he appreciated India's positions in support of the Sudan in international fora. Sudan's Foreign Minister, Ali Karti, said Mr. Khurshid had assured the President that India will continue to support programs and projects to help Sudan in its fight against poverty. India is working in a number of different areas including sugar and electricity production and distribution as well as offering scholarships to Sudanese students. Mr. Khurshid arrived in Khartoum on Tuesday for a two day visit. His discussions with Sudan's Foreign Minister focused on trade as well as cooperation in agriculture and manufacturing. The value of trade between the two countries will reach nearly US$1billion at the end of this fiscal year. Mr. Khurshid noted India was an active partner in development projects in Sudan, especially in the sugar industry and the modernization of irrigation, and is funding of a thermal plant expected to produce about 500 megawatts of energy. It was also helping Sudan in livestock production, small industries development, microfinance and self-employment mechanisms. He said noted that the meetings of the joint committee on political consultation and of the Sudan-India Joint Ministerial Committee are to resume after a break of eight years.
