(Telecompaper) Swatch said it has signed a payments deal with Visa and Visa Europe for its upcoming Swatch Bellamy smartwatch. Visa customers in the US, Switzerland and Brazil will be able to use the upcoming Bellamy to tap and make payments. The smartwatch will use payment technology from Visa. The watch is named after US writer Edward Bellamy, who wrote a book in 1888 called "Looking Backward 2000-1887", where he describes a utopian world where cash has been replaced by credit/debit cards. Swatch also noted a word play on the name: Bellany (or bel ami) also means "good friend" in French. The watch will launch in early 2016, initially in the US, Switzerland and Brazil. It was first presented in China in October. The smartwatch can be used globally, anywhere contactless, NFC-based Visa payments are accepted.
