(Telecompaper) Swisscom has claimed a first in Europe with the use of tri-band carrier over LTE in both FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) and TDD (Time Division Duplex) modes. The demonstration used three carriers in two bands in a radio access network provided by Ericsson and commercial-grade chipsets from Qualcomm. The Swisscom Fussli shop in Zurich was the site of the commercial test. The new technology achieved speeds of up to 335 Mbps and is expected to give more users in the same cell site access to top speeds. Swisscom said it plans to upgrade its network with the technology in busy metropolitan areas by next summer, when smartphones supporting the standards should be available. Qualcomm's X12 LTE modem was used for the trial.
